Our birdlife
The coastal wetlands in Melbourne’s west are one of the most diverse and significant bird habitats in the nation.
Birds of the Cheetham and Altona
Key Biodiversity Area
To highlight the importance of our wetlands to birds, Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre invited Kevin Wood to write the booklet Birds of the Cheetham and Altona Key Biodiversity Area, along with accessible fact sheets for each of its chapters.
Key Biodiversity Area Annual Health Check
We are fortunate to have a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) on our door step, the Cheetham and Altona KBA. KBAs are ‘sites contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity’, in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. An assessment of the status, pressures and conservation response in each KBA is conducted each year by a KBA Guardian under the auspices of BirdLife Australia. Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre was appointed the KBA Guardian for Cheetham and Altona KBA in 2020.
