9 May is the first World Migratory Bird Day of 2026, when we farewell the migratory birds from our shores. Some have come from as far as Siberia to spend the summer feeding on the amazing coastal wetlands we have in Port Phillip Bay. They will now spend the northern summer breeding. The 2026 theme is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!”, which highlights the important role of community science (also referred to as citizen science) for the conservation of migratory birds. On 10 October the second WMBD we will celebrate the birds’ return with an Open Day!
