Water Quality Monitoring

Melbourne Water WaterWatch - Monthly

Regularly monitoring water quality over time enables early detection of changes in water quality and the natural environment, making early intervention possible.

Melbourne Water maintains a database of water monitoring results through its WaterWatch program, and provides testing kits and support to the Citizen Science team.

The Citizen Science team conducts quarterly water testing at three sites in Hobsons Bay:

  1. Notla Drain

  2. Jawbone Wetlands

  3. Cherry Lake

The following tasks are undertaken at each site:

  1. Habitat assessment and photographic records

  2. Macro-invertebrate count

  3. Collection of water samples, and testing for

  • Air Temperature

  • Water Temperature

  • Dissolved Oxygen

  • pH

  • Turbidity

  • Electrical Conductivity

  • Phosphate

  • Ammonium

  • Macro-invertebrate count

Water testing normally takes place on Saturday mornings between 10am and 12pm. If you would like to participate in the water testing program - please send an email to HBWC Citizen Science requesting to be added to HBWC’s Water Testing WhatsApp group.
