Water Testing

Melbourne Water WaterWatch - Monthly

Repeated testing of water quality at the same site over time enables significant changes in water quality and/or environment to be detected and acted on in a timely way.

Melbourne Water maintains a database of water testing observations through its Water Watch program, and provides the testing kits used by the Citizen Science team.

The Citizen Science team conducts quarterly water testing at the following sites in Hobsons Bay:

  • Notla Drain

  • Laverton Creek

  • Truganina Wetlands

  • Cheetham Wetlands

The following tasks are undertaken at each site:

  1. Habitat assessment and photographic records

  2. Macro-invertebrate count

  3. Collection of water samples, and testing for

  • Air Temperature

  • Water Temperature

  • Dissolved Oxygen

  • pH

  • Turbidity

  • Electrical Conductivity

  • Phosphate

  • Ammonium

  • Macro-invertebrate count

Water testing normally takes place on Saturday mornings between 10am and 12pm. If you would like to participate in the water testing program - please send an email to HBWC Citizen Science requesting to be added to HBWC’s Water Testing WhatsApp group.
