She trained as an Ophthalmologist (Eye Specialist). Her PhD investigated health professional education, focussing on how ophthalmologists train and learn. Deborah has taught and published in gender medicine, public health, health professional education research methods, and genetic renal-eye research. She is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has served on the Board of the College of Surgeons, Board of the College of Ophthalmologists, Board of the Eye and Ear Hospital, Board the Australian Federation of Medical Women, and the Governance Committee of the Medical Women’s International Association. An alumnus of Leadership Victoria’s Williamson Community Leadership Program, Deborah is strongly supportive of community-building and reconciliation with First Nations people. She is also a keen bushwalker and passionate advocate for the environment. She actively supports biodiversity conservation and believes in the importance of protecting native habitats and species for future generations. Completed in 2020, the feasibility study explains the need for a Wetlands Centre in Melbourne’s west. Grimshaw leads a team of specialist consultants that bring expertise in wetlands landscaping, indigenous design and culturally responsive engagement practices. HBWC is working closely with Hobsons Bay City Council who are managing the design phase of the project. Heritage Hobsons Bay presented an online panel discussion that explores indigenous cultural heritage landscapes featuring indigenous architect Jefa Greenaway, and Nick Griffin, landscape architect. Biophilic and Indigenous design principles guided the design. The panel was hosted by Hobsons Bay City Council.
